Cothrel is an accomplished leader in the medtech industry with over 30 years of experience in general management, development, commercialization, operations, and strategy. He has a strong track record of successfully bringing new products to market in both corporate settings (including Abbott and Roche) and startups, where he has held multiple C-suite roles and navigated several successful exits.

His expertise spans glucose monitoring, coagulation monitoring, cardiac monitoring, and molecular biology tools. Cothrel has raised over $60 million from various sources and has managed significant business areas, including Roche’s $100 million Applied Science business. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He previously served as Vice President of Operations at UC’s Office of Innovation, at the 1819 Innovation Hub. He has held CTO and founder roles in startups such as HydroLabs and Eccrine Systems, and directs the Novel Devices Laboratory, a leader in biosensing technology.

He is the most patented professor in UC's history, a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, and has over 200 publications. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and a PhD in Electrical Engineering.
